Japan's Kamakura shogunate was overthrown by Ashikaga Takauji, a military leader who had previously served under the Tokugawa government. In 1331, the Kamakura's rule was opposed by the Japanese Emperor Go-Daigo, who launched a military campaign to overthrown the shogunate and restore himself to power.
