There are given many personality theories which explains the difference between personal behavior and the way people think and act.

For example:

School students, they are given fewer efforts for their school grades, so one of explanation that students has low achievement motivation level and have low self-efficacy. Students may think that they don't have such capability to achieve good grades and thus makes fewer efforts.
