How did Gibson v ogden expand the idea of federal supremacy?

The main way in which gibbons v. ogden expanded the idea of federal supremacy is that it held that the the federal government had the right to regulate commerce, even when it came to navigation--meaning that the state of New York's attempt to do so itself was invalid.
