    True. Proof is the Great Anti-Buddhist Persecution, started by the Tang ruler Emperor Wuzong. It reached its peak in 845 AD. The persecution was mainly directed towards buddhism, but also to any other foreign religions. To put it simply, China wanted to be China, not India or England. They wanted only Chinese religions. So yes, the Tang rulers did set out to destroy Buddhism.
