I believe the answer is: our attention is a limited resource, and if we overload it, we cannot pay attention to anything else.

According to this theory, people's attention resource is limited to around 10% of our working memory capacity. When this translated into working productivity, it is best to stick to as little as workload possible but you put all your attention to it rather than taking too many workload and increase the risk of making mistakes.
