Imagine that a softball player wears special glasses that shift her visual field upward 20 degrees. This means that when the player wears these glasses, everything appears higher than it actually is. With practice the player can hit a ball with the glasses on. What will happen when the player first hits a ball with the glasses off?

    With the use of glasses the perception of the player is changed and she sees everything higher than it really is. With the constant use of the glasses, the player became accustomed to the increased proportion that the glasses provides, and her brain began to use that increased proportion as the true proportion. Over time, the player has adapted all that vision that the glasses provide, and so she has no difficulty playing. However, once the player removes the glasses, her brain will wonder at the normal proportion of the objects and during the game, the player will have the impression that the ball is lower than it really is.
