Tensions between these ethnic groups and the central Russian government at Moscow escalated throughout the 1990s, and resulted in several minor wars.

    The first president of Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union was Boris Yeltsin. He led a program of privatization of the economy, because under the Soviet System private property did not exist, and the economy was state-centered. Despite Yeltsin's efforts, the Russian economy did horribly in the 1990s. It lost almost one third of GDP.
