An example of an appeal to ethos is the speech of John F. Kennedy during his speech in his inauguration as the President of the United States. The president used emotions to express the capacities of the people to change the country and also the world. His famous line was " Do what you can do to the country not what your country can do to you."

Ethos is establishing credibility. For example, in Julius Caesar, Brutus's speech opened with words such as "friends" "countrymen" "lend me your ears"

Friends - same level and he is not higher

    Countrymen - establishes community

Lend me your ears - a thoughtful way of asking someone to listen
