They appeared in the form of two pamphlets in November 1787 and May 1788. The identity of the author is unknown, as they were only signed with the pseudonym "The Federal Farmer," but some possible authors include Richard Henry Lee and Melancton Smith. The main purpose of the letters was to criticize the position adopted by the Federalists. They claimed that the Constitution would tear down the sovereignty of the states, and that the federal system would be the end of liberty in America.
