On January 23, 1964, the 24th Amendment became part of the Constitution when South Dakota ratified it.

The 24th amendment is important because African Americans in the South faced significant discrimination and could not vote for elected officials that would work to end the discrimination. Although the poll tax was never a large sum of money, it was just enough to stop poor African Americans and whites from voting.

Today, The 24th Amendment Prohibits Poll Taxes ... The amendment forbids Congress and states from requiring poll taxes in order to vote in federal elections. Amendments to the Constitution are proposed by both houses in Congress and require two-thirds of the states to ratify, or approve, them.
