What term is used by political scientists to refer to a shift in party allegiances of electoral support?

    The term used is called realignment. Realignment occurs when an old coalition within a party is being replaced by a new coalition of members. This change can be sudden or it could take years. Some people have suggested that a realignment cycle averages about 30 years.
