The ego plays a big role in our lives. It is the main character actor that interacts with our daily lives. When we react to something whether good or bad, it is the ego that interprets these information in to how it is being perceived. The ego will use the imagination to create thoughts that go in line with its self preservation. A lot of times these thoughts aren't real but within our minds, they are and it is justified. Philip felt shame and guilt after being caught as it was he's ego's interpretation. If he got away with stealing than the ego would probably create a feeling of empowerment. It was probably he's ego that created the need to steal in the first place.
