Reforms started with Martin Luther in West Europe around the 16th and 17th century.

Martin Luther revolution led to the idea of "justification by faith alone". Protestants did not believe in the ultimate authority of the Pope or any priestly order to be justified as it was held for long in Catholic standard. The protestants simply disregarded standards of strict religious worship operationally present with the Roman Catholics.
