How did the Buddha say people should live

People should live according to 3 main practices:

Sila: good conduct, virtue, morality. This involves living in equality and the law of reciprocity which states: Do onto others what you want others to do onto you (Also called the Golden Rule)

Samadhi: meditation, concentration, mental development. People should live while developing their mind towards the attainment of wisdom that could lead to personal freedom.

Prajna: insight, enlightenment wisdom. One should have a calm and pure mind to attain real wisdom.
