Why did the french decide to reconquer mexico?

The French empire decides to reconquer Mexico for the main reason that the US is hugely involved in the Mexican civil war and that it may take its advantage to exploit on what Mexico has due to their Monroe Doctrine. However, the French underestimated the Mexicans leading to their failed invasion.
