    Before Xerxes became King his father, Darius, was King of Persia. However, the Ionians revolted against the Persian Empire and the Greek states supported the Ionian revolt. Darius wanted to punish the Greeks for supporting the Ionian revolt so he invaded Greece first, but surprisingly his much larger force was defeated by the Greeks (look up Battle of Marathon).
