After the collapse of the Soviet Union, The Chechen-Ingush ASSR was split into the Republic of Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic. Chechnya declared its independence from Russia in 1992.

Russian troops entered Chechnya in 1994 to stop the independence movement. The war lasted until 1996 and killed up to one hundred thousand people. Following the First Chechen War with Russia, Chechnya was able to exercise de facto independence as the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. However, another war broke out in 1999 and control again was returned to the Russian federal government. This is called the Second Chechen War. There has been an extensive reconstruction and rebuilding process implemented but there are still skirmishes with rebels in the mountains and regions to the south into 2019.
