Harper Lee's accounts of the town of Maycomb in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird are based on what she experienced growing up in the real town of Monroeville, Alabama. She actually was good friends with Truman Capote who lived close to her and had been friends with her since childhood. Near Truman's house apparently lives Mr. and Mrs. Jones. According to Charles J. Shields, the biographer of Harper Lee, Mrs. Jones was known to be unkind to her husband and the local children who would travel past her house.
