The answer is that it was a short but difficult series of battles. The Allies attacked through air and by sea. There were many sporadic battles and those who were dropped from the air missed their targets and some were killed. Those who stormed the beach had difficulty taking them due to the entrenchment of the enemy and the difficulty of storming through machine gun fire. Though the Allies landed and pushed through to Germany, many lost their lives in the assault.
