Alexander the Great (356 BC - 323 BC) was born in the kingdom of Macedonia, part of ancient Greece. He managed to create one of the largest empires in those times, from Greece, embodying the whole Middle East until the Northwest regions of India. He unified all the traditional Greek territories and afterwards he expanded towards the East the territories of the empire. He was a great military commander, never defeated in battle.

One of the characteristics of the empire was the great cultural diffusion that took place inside. He founded the city of Alexandria, among many others, but this would grow and develop as a learning center, and after Alexander's death, during the Hellenistic period the city reached its top as learning center.
