    This is a short story by hemming which describes the character Santiago and how he overcomes his fear of fishing. At first he was very poor at fishing and then later it was Marlin who taught him fishing. The relationship that Marlin and Santiago had was that of a grandfather and a grandson.

    The villagers first felt pity of Santiago and his skills of fishing later through his hard work and determination he acquired the skills of fishing and set a trend to the villagers.
