    Explanation: Provenience is the source or place of origin that an object or artifact comes from. In archaeology, provenience is the vertical and horizontal location of an artifact within the matrix.

    Provenience is very important in archaeology as knowing the exact horizontal and vertical location in the matrix sheds more light on the artifact as well as let you determine the relationship between different objects found within the matrix.

    Horizontal provenience measures distance from the sides and records relationship between objects while vertical provenience measures depth and gives context as to when the artifacts were deposited.
