    De Gaulle wanted to see France independent and being able to defend itself, and he launched a nuclear power program, which made France the fourth nuclear power at the time.

    Another thing that he did was restoring amicable relations with the Germans, which lead to a more prominent role of France (as allied with Germany) in Europe.
