The event that defines"The shot heard round the world" is "It was the first shot fired in the Revolutionary War." The phrase belongs to the poem "Concord Hymn" by Ralph Waldo Emerson, written in 1837. Emerson describes the events that took place at the North Bridge in Concord on April, 19th 1775 where the first British soldiers were shot dead by the American militia. This is considered to be the first clash in the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and the beginning of the American Revolutionary War.

The same phrase is also used to refer to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June, 28th 1914. This event is considered to be one of the main causes which led to World War I.
