Answer: Continental drift
Explanation: Ridges and trenches are caused by continental drift, the earth is covered by a series of tectonic plates that float on a mantle of molten rock. The wide trenches are caused by plates moving away from each other and the ridges are caused by plates overlapping with one sliding under the other. This is called subduction
