    The Seventeen Article Constitution refers to a document in Japanese history.

    It was a code of moral and virtues for the ruling class, issued in 604 CE by the regent Shotuku Taishi.

    The articles stressed the Confucian concepts of the employment of officials based on their merits, the responsibilities of the officials and the obedience of the subjects to their ruler.

    The purpose of the Articles was to ensure the smooth running of the state and to provide a set of guiding principles for the officials and the subjects.

    It was one of the earliest constitutions in history.
