Urban/Suburban sprawl is the extension of a city into its surrounding locations which have lower population and residential housing density. Its causes include a growing population as well as a demand for larger living spaces which are not readily available in cities.

Urban sprawl displaces wildlife by destroying their habitation, leads to an increase in pollution and loss of community spirit that is common found in smaller towns but absent in cities. Economically, it may provide employment opportunities if companies locate their businesses in the newly urbanized areas. It also increases the prices of property, which is a good thing for owners but not so beneficial to renters.
