    In the wake of Indian Independence from British occupation in 1947, the country was divided into parts known as Indian Partition.

    India has been a pluralistic society with the followers of two major religions - Islam and Hinduism. But the internal division between the two community always grew into communal tensions leading to major conflicts. In order to solve this, Muslim league headed by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Indian National Congress by Jawahar Lal Nehru decided to divide the country into two parts at the time of Independence.

    The partition eventually led to the formation of Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Hindu-dominated Union of India in 1947.
