    There are three different branches in Islam (the practice of the Muslim faith).

    Suni Islam: The branch with the most members. They believe that Muhammad did not designate a definite successor. Shia Islam: Beleive the prophet Muhammad designated Ali Ibn Abi Talib as his successor and leader. Khajarites: School of thought that originated during the crisis of leadership after Muhammad died. They led a revolt against Ali Ibn Abi Talib.
