Millions of workers died from the Black Death, resulting in a labor shortage in cities where the plague had hit most. The workers who survived after a third of Europe was wiped out were able to demand higher wages. Back in the countryside, many serfs and free peasants simply left their farms in search of better opportunities, or were able to extract concessions from the rich landowners.
