    According to Robert Merton's Strain Theory, a build up on Emile Durkheim's work, bybsuggesting that having access to goals that are socially acceptable, determines the conformity or deviation level of an individual in a society.

    Hence, he concluded that, the minority of people who decide to overthrow the socially accepted goals and replace them through unacceptable means are referred to as Rebels or Rebellions.

    In his analysis, he defined various ways or groups in which individual act towards having a socially accepted goal and having no socially accepted means to pursue it.

    These groups includes:

    1. Conformity: those who stay to the societal principle and chose not to deviate.

    2. Innovation: those that innovates legal means or ways to achieve their socially acceptable goals, even though it is different from the conventional ways.

    3. Ritualism: these are group of people who break down or lower their goals into bits, so as to achieve them gradually, while still doing it in a socially acceptable ways.

    4. Retreatism: those that have retreat, by subjecting themselves to begging and all forms of alms seeking, rather than working towards it.

    5. Rebellion: these are group of people that find socially unacceptable ways to achieve the socially acceptable goals. Examples are terrorist, armed robbers, etc.
