The youths of the counterculture originated when Tom Hayden and Al Haber formed Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in 1960.

The counterculture, as the term itself says, refers to the lifestyle which goes counter to the social norm. The youths of the counterculture (which descended from the Beat generation before them) believed there was something wrong with the society they were living in, and therefore decided to do something about it, first through SDS, then through more drastic measures.
