Read this excerpt from "Birdfoot's Grampa." But, leathery hands full of wet brown life, knee deep in the summer roadside grass, he just smiled and said they have places to go to too. How does the line "he just smiled and said" provide a clue to the theme that age brings wisdom? Grampa is impressed with Birdfoot's use of humor. Grampa is sensitive to Birdfoot's lack of knowledge.
