The reason that Frankie insists on this false memory is because his false memory feels as real as true memories and is very persistent.

Fake memories can feel very tenacious and very realistic. Frankie really convinced himself that he did hear the world because his mistaken memory of hearing the word fruit has entrenched itself in his mind.
