The Labor Day Bill was passed under Grover Cleveland. This was due to the Haymarket Massacre which occurred in Chicago where a peaceful protest about raising wages and shortening work hours turned deadly. The first Monday in September is now dedicated to Labor Day in honor of the Knights of Labor, who organized the Haymarket Protest, and who wanted better work conditions.
