    Before the television generation, boxing was regarded as one of the most popular sports in the US. However, boxing lost its appeal for TV networks and watchers because of the brutality of the sport.

    One of the main events that turned this around was a match from 1982. between Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini and Duk Koo Kim, after which the latter died. The tragedy made networks reconsider broadcasting of the sport that was perceived as brutal, and potentially fatal. As a result, boxing stopped being broadcast on the major TV networks in the States.
