The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor to prevent the United States from interfereing in Japan's military actions in Southeast Asia (esp. China) against the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. They also attacked because the US, the UK, and the Dutch refused to export oil to the Japanese while they occupied China.

Following the attack, Japan declared war on the United States. The next day, the US declared war on Japan.
