    The only action that insured that the newly freed slaves in the South were treated somewhat humanely between 1867 and 1876 was the a) 14th Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment was created to protect citizens rights and equal protection of the laws and was created to protect the former slaves from the South. The Southern states were opposed, but were forced to follow it, because had they not they would not have been represented in Congress.
