    Jail is a place of incarceration for less serious offense (such as petty theft, or public disorder). Prison is the place where they put a more serious offender (such as rappists or murderers).

    The amount of time required for the incarceration tend to be different from one person to another. But it's mostly influenced by the severity of their offenses.
