In a portrait Marianne was painting of a friend, she incorporated a lamp with a shade. To show that the lamp was turned on, Marianne painted a reflection of the light on the wall behind the lamp. The reflection of the light on the wall was in the shape of a conic section formed when a plane intersects both nappes of a double-napped cone parallel to the symmetry axis.
