Rhizobia is a bacteria which fix nitrogen after it is established inside the root nodules of legumes. For this nitrogen fixation to be successful, the rhizobia essentially requires a plant host. This process is called nobulation process. There will be a high levels of soil nitrate after the harvest of the crops. Thherefore, the result of successful communication of the rhizobia and its plant host is the formation on the legume roots.

In these structures the bacteria converts nitrogen into ammonia, through a process called nitrogen fixation. The plant host then uses the ammonia as a nitrogen source.
