The correct answer is land was exchanged for loyalty at all levels of society

To organize the exploitation of land in the feud, feudal lords and serfs used a number of organizational criteria. These forms of organization facilitated control over the routine of servants and the regulation of the various taxes imposed on agricultural production. Indeed, without the use of these criteria, delimiting the use of properties would be somewhat more complicated.

Generally, the lands were divided into three elementary categories: the manly meek, the servile meek and the communal meek. The gentle manorial corresponded to half of the arable land in the whole fiefdom. The food produced there was entirely passed on to the landowner and the servant was obliged to devote three to four days a week to the cultivation of this land.
