The emphasis on landscape in Chinese paintings reflects the influence of Daoism on the natives. The word for landscape in Chinese, means mountain-water. This goes on to reinforce the importance of nature. It was a norm for Chinese painters to take to the mountains in order to reflect, write or paint. They did this because they believed in learning the "Dao" or way in nature. Since they believed that paintings could be a medium for finding a way, they included landscapes in their paintings for the benefit of everyone.
