In 1862 this act gave the opportunity to Americans and freed slaves to do an application in order to receive up to 160 acres of federal land. In addition, in february 1861 Lincoln considered it was necessary to distribute some of the wild lands of the country in order to give citizens the alternative to have the means and opportunities. The places with more successful claims were Montana, North Dakota, Colorado and Nebraska.
