Ishmael at last starts to have faith in the mantra with the assistance of Esther. She would listen and make inquiries about the stories he would enlighten her concerning his life in the war and her voice one day simply sunk in. After some time he would reveal to her to an ever increasing extent and the way she was with him let him realize that he was only a child who was constrained into war.
