The aspects of interpersonal communication function through two functional goals - the rational goal and the instrumental goal.

Getting someone to do something for us, getting information we need, or asking for support are examples of instrumental goal. It is an everyday or long term functional goal which people use people to communicate to others.

For example asking your friend to bring you some things from the market while he returns from work is an instrumental goal of interpersonal communication.
