What does it mean to be alienated or separated from others?

    "Alienated" comes from the word "alien" which comes from the Latin word for "other". Basically this means that someone is alone - whether physically separated from others, such as in solitary confinement - or that they don't have a good relationship with others, such as when they can't communicate well and feel alone despite being surrounded by people.
