    The National Defense Educational Act (NDEA) was signed into law on September 2, 1958.

    It provided additional funding to America's educational institutions (schools, universities and research projects).

    The Act was created as a direct result of the launching of the first ever satellite Sputnik by the Soviet Union. The was a general feeling of failure and falling behind in achievements compared to the the Soviet Union, the act was intended as a push to do further research and to win the space race between these two rival countries.
