    They were an agricultural community. The land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers was well watered and very fertile, so it could support large numbers of people, and it generated an agricultural surplus. The surplus allowed the development of a class of people who could devote their lives to study, to religion and to culture. And they did this in the first cities
