Father Divine and his followers were African American.

Father Divine and the followers of his faith held their religious meetings at his home in Sayville, New York which was a mostly white community on Long Island. In 1931 his following had grown in number and his white Sayville neighbors complained about the growing attendance at meetings in his home. Therefore Father Divine and 80 of his followers were arrested and incarcerated for thirty days for breaking the peace. The arrest was racially motivated. Racial segregation was still implemented in the 1930's America and general feeling towards African American communities by the White communities was that of inferiority.
